is my dvd burner bad? it freezes my pc whenever i put a dvd in.

everything in my pc is new except for my dvd burner and my hard drive.

i didn't reinstall windows when i switched over my hard drive. i just installed all of my drivers.

i just updated my bios but that wasn't the problem, it still freezes. and when i try do a clean install of windows, it loads all of the system files but them i get a BSOD after it says "starting windows". i didn't press f6 to load my sata drivers when it asks me if i have any 3rd party drivers to install. but i don't even get far enough to see if windows will see my hard drive or not (plus i don't want to experiment and create a sata drivers floppy disk and take my disk drive out of my backup pc and put it in my new pc. but i only had to do that for my old pc 'cause my friend lost my cd with the drivers on it [i gave it my soyo mb to him and then he gave it back it when he decided to not to build a pc. and this was before my epox mb died on me and i had to switch over to my soyo mb]). anyways, never mind the stuff in (), i kinda went off topic.

so, is my dvd burner bad and i just need to order a new dvd burner? my system has been freezin' when i put a dvd in it since i built it on friday but i managed to install my drivers (it originally only froze if i restarted windows and i left the dvd in the drive). now it freezes all the time whenever i put a dvd in.
